One Korean quote said: “Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.” And I think that’s beautiful. So, following that advice, why don’t you take a look at the following piece of cultural intelligence content I have crayoned here?
What words were exported from Korean to other nations?

I remember starting reading it and the first chapter was about author’s struggles and beautiful learning path of Vietnamese. I find reading about different languages around the world a captivating activity and that’s because I get to experience the cultural intelligence but also to expose my mind to a new way of understanding people in general. It’s making me become more in love with people in the sense that I discover myself to become so much more tolerant about myself and less judgemental about people’s actions or behaviours or way of speech, because everything makes sense now.

People are a portrayal of their language and culture and the more you read about languages and in depth descriptions regarding behind the scenes of a foreign language creation, such as the ones highlighted by Gaston Dorren in his book “Babel”, you get to achieve a higher level of open mindness and flexibility and adaptability.
I got inspired by the book and in the light of sharing with you my discoveries and little gems of cultural intelligence, I have created a document about some key notions around Vietnam or Vietnamese language.
Whether it was created in a lab or not, if it got out of control or if it was naturally derived, this corona virus (Covid-19) seems to have taken control over our lives, in the sense that fear, panic and shock are daily emotions nowadays encountered not only in people that seriously could have a reason to feel like that, but it’s a common feeling encountered in young people and young adults or in healthy human beings. Yes, we should be concerned, but not to this extent of “we are all gonna die”.
If we think about the numerology of 2020, which is made of double 2s, and if we remember that 2 is the number that expresses emotions and feelings, we can conclude that this year is extremely emotional. There’s 2 sides to this coin. We can express positive feelings or we can choose negative emotions. And no matter which one you choose, you are right. When there is double 2s, we augment and increase the intensity of that symbol and of that energy, in this case the energy of the numerology-related number 2, which is emotions. We can choose to focus on positives and not on negatives, and that will expand even further, bringing more good energy in our lives and potentially saving us from negative experiences.
But if we solely focus on the negatives and the fearful images, words and feelings we are shown in the media, then, we can only expect to increase that and make a hill out of a mole. We have got to keep our rational minds here in calm, and focus on living our lives without having the panic around covid-19 take over our lives.
Fear, panic and anxiety are negative emotions and they can attract negative experiences in our bodies. Therefore, healing our emotions is critical to overcome our diseases or to make them be felt to a lesser extent. Flowers from Dr.Bach Flower Therapy have the potential to heal our emotional challenges. Plants are living beings. Become aware of this and be mindful of your surroundings. The more we engage to our natural surroundings, the easier will become to feel the subtle healing powers of these flowers. Because plants are in constant communication with us. Dr. Edward Bach categorised his remedies into The 12 Healers, the 7 Helpers and the Second 19 Helpers.
Dr. Bach felt The 12 Healers Flower Remedies were for our primary soul types, the sort of person we are. He equated these with the Soul lessons we have come to learn such as inner peace (Agrimony), strength and ability to say NO (Centaury) and wisdom (Cerato). We can see these types more easily in children – as adults we have accumulated other layers or imbalances – but when we are under pressure our soul type may betray itself. We sure feel this pressure these days with the new corona virus.
So, the 12 Healers are Agrimony, Centaury, Cerato, Chicory (to dissolve self-pity and “me,me,me” into generosity of giving), Clematis (to bring dreamers back to Earth), Gentian (to resolve discouragement and despondency into the positive quality of faith) Impatiens (to release the quick tense mind into gentleness), Mimulus (transforming fear of known things into bravery), Rock Rose (to transform terror and dread into courage), Scleranthus (to bring balance and determination from indecision), Vervain (to release over-enthusiasm into quiet and tolerance), Water-Violet (to change a proud aloof or quietly grieving person into the joy of service and taking part in life). Please note this is only a brief description and not the full understanding of the remedy. I will come back with a later post on the full “prescription” around these lovely flower remedies.
The 7 Helpers of the Dr. Bach Flower remedies are to support the Healer Remedies for long term conditions and are as follows: Gorse (for hopelessness), Heather (for fussy introspection), Rock Water (for rigidity of attitude), Wild Oat (for lack of direction in life), Olive (for weariness and exhaustion), Oak (for the strong person who never gives up), Vine (for a domineering forceful attitude, to bring the quality of calm wise leadership).
The other 19 flower remedies are called the second 19 and relate to emotional states that result from life’s knocks and challenges and are as follows: Holly (for jealousy, envy, revenge and suspicion and greed – in full negative, bringing the quality of love), Pine (which brings self-esteem relieving a feeling of guilt and self-blame), Aspen (for fear of unknown things), Beech (for intolerance), Cherry Plum (for fear of the mind giving way), Chestnut Bud (for failure to learn from mistakes), Crab Apple (this is also called the cleansing remedy, also known for self-hatred), Elm (if you feel overwhelmed by responsibility), Heather (for self-centredness and self concern), Honeysuckle (for living in the past), Hornbeam (for tiredness at the thought of doing something), Larch (for lack of confidence), Mustard (for deep gloom for no reason), Red Chestnut (for over-concern for the welfare of loved ones), Star of Bethlehem (for shock), Sweet Chestnut (for extreme mental anguish, when everything has been tried and there is no light left), Walnut (for protection from change and unwanted influences), White Chestnut (for unwanted thoughts and mental arguments), Wild Rose (drifting, resignation, apathy) and Willow (for self-pity and resentment).
Bach Flower remedies are an alternative or complementary treatment that is used for emotional problems and pain. They’re made out of watered-down extracts from the flowers of wild plants. Dr. Edward Bach was a medical doctor and homeopath and created these remedies in early 1900s.
Dr. Edward Bach used to say “Every single person has a life to live, a work to do, a glorious personality, a wonderful individuality”.
So, in my opinion, I think we need to change our emotional state to be able to conquer any potential diseases. Yes, it can be very hard to be in a positive mindset when you are really struggling when really ill, and that’s why it’s important to stay up as positive , as chilled, as calm and as mindful as possible to avoid our energetic body get a glitch and we potentially get sick.
Please maintain your mental health to a higher level of positive mindset, thinking and attitude and peaceful state of mind and tranquillity and avoid stress.

This way we keep ourselves far away from all negativity and potential outcomes because of that. But, if you still feel anguished and you feel there is no optimism within you, then you might consider Sweet Chestnut remedy. Walnut remedy will protect us all from the fear we experience regarding this new change that we need to adapt to, this new world that is to appear because of the Coronavirus outbreaks.
If you have repetitive thoughts and you feel you cannot switch off and you find it hard to sleep given what’s happening in the world , then White Chestnut remedy can help with your tranquillity and sleep. The mind being the most delicate and sensitive part of the body, shows the onset and the course of the disease much more than the body, so that the outlook of mind is chosen as the guide as to which remedy or plant or flower remedies are necessary.”

I am reading a book called “21st Century Goddess, the modern girl’s guide to the universe” and I found this insightful quiz that I would like to share with you. This quiz relates to the type of an archetype goddess that you embody at this present time, however, after reading about each goddess, you might realise that you are a specific goddess now, but you actually aspire to become a different type. It is very fun as well, so dive deep into this curious exercise of discovering a hidden essence you hold inside and reveal yourself as true goddess:

If you got a combination of say mostly Bs and Fs, read the profile for each Goddess and see which one most fits where you are today or best suits where you feel you’re going. The great thing about this quiz is that you can re-do it at anytime and as often as you like. It may be that you’re changing Goddesses daily if you’re in a period of massive change in your life. ATHENA – Athena is out there, the centre of activity, helping and organizing. She is intelligent and self-confident, willing to put herself on the line for her beliefs and opinions. Athena will keep her head in a conflict, and maintains a clear vision in emotional situations. If you want something done, Athena makes it happen. Men admire her for her practical way of dealing with pressure, but at the same time they can be intimidated by her, because she can outsmart them with her sharp intellect and her persuasive arguments. in work and career she will be attracted to the corporate world, boardrooms, committees and academic circles, or anything where she can make herself known and gain recognition for her talents. KEYWORDS – professional, worldly, transforming, reformer, social organizer, courageous. SHADOW – over-achiever, controller, manipulator and sceptical.
DEMETER – Demeter is the mother of mothers, she has patience and likes to be surrounded by people who need her help or motherly advice. She loves children and wants a family – the whole box and dice. She is also very good with hands and engages in anything that’s crafty oriented. In work and career she is often found in hospitals, schools, church groups or fundraising. KEYWORDS – motherly, home-maker, peacemaker, counsellor, nurturing, instinctive. SHADOW – overbearing, fussy, stubborn and excessively dating.
HERA – Hera is conscious of her position in society. She upholds what she considers important to make a pleasant environment, although she can be a little conservative and always knows what to say to whom. she is socially adept and always in sync with the correct etiquette for every occasion. Her dignity is the bedrock of her values. Hera is formidable, and will often be at the centre of disputes, debating and clashing with people. If you are aware, you will appreciate her gifts, respect her and not treat on her toes! KEYWORDS – commanding, confident, authoritative, dignified, self-assured. SHADOW – social climber, arrogant, aloof, superior.
PERSEPHONE – Persephone is the person who knows how others feel. She senses what you need to feel better, and she’s the one that you tell your deepest, darkest secrets to, even if you’ve just met her. She often needs time alone, to deal with her unseen world. Highly connected to the spiritual world, she can appear to be misunderstood and will have an aura around her, protecting her from the outside world. In work and career she is to be found as a counsellor, writer, working with the dying, healer, health practitioner. KEYWORDS – mystic, sensitive, secretive, spiritual, nonconforming, reclusive. SHADOW – overly sensitive, out of touch, whimsical, unrealistic.
You can be all 6 Goddesses, but you can be only one at a time. There is no such thing as the “wrong” Goddess for you. It’s more a question of efficacy and timing. You are not going to relate to all that is said about these Goddesses. There are going to be times when one will appeal or be more relevant to you than others. As with anything, it is about balance: it may seem at times one Goddess is in overdrive in your life. You’ll feel this in a physical and emotional sense because the influence can be very obvious and usually feels too pervasive or dominating. This is what happens when you are overdoing the Goddess. This means the particular shadow side or negative aspects of the Goddess in operation are showing up. It is wise to be alert and to try to avoid this occurring, or at least to minimize the effects. And to do this, you need to watch the signs. For example, if you were “overdoing” the Goddess Artemis, you may be acting too aggressively (as opposed to assertively), feel insecure (as opposed to feeling safe and confident in your abilities) and prefer to be alone to the point of isolation (as opposed to feeling happily independent). These are some of the shadow aspects of Artemis in the context of what the “healthy” or positive aspects of Artemis are. so to compensate for the “extreme” Artemis energy, you could concentrate on healing and overcoming your fears, forgiving others, and practising letting of of the situation. Compassion and love – for both yourself and those around you – would be a great starting point for a longer term remedy in this case.
This is why the Goddesses archetypes are so helpful. They can be indicators of where you may gain awareness of your shadow and access to the solutions that are blocking you from whatever is holding you back from reaching your true potential. The shadow elements are considered by the ego to be undesirable or simply not useful, and are therefore relegated to the dark. And these same shadow aspects and also be positive in keeping the ego in check, but we must actively and consciously choose to deal with them – we need to truly “engage” and get to the heart of it.
Often a woman becomes stronger and wiser by understanding them and working with and through them, rather than pushing them away in denial or projecting their effects on to other people. For the same reasons you may therefore also resist the Goddess you most need, the one who can show you how to heal. You are the one living your life, and if you’re ready to face your own shadow and deal with its effects, you will start to really live.”
As C.G. Jung points out: “it is often tragic to see how blatantly a person bungles their own life and the lives of others, yet remains totally incapable of seeing how much the whole tragedy originates in himself or herself.”
AND WHY ARE THESE CONCEPTS IMPORTANT AND NEEDED TO BE SHARED
A tiny bit of knowledge regarding cultural intelligence CQ was detailed in my previous post and you can have read here – What I learned this week.
Understanding, using and increasing our cultural intelligence improves the way we relate to and network with diverse others. As we see a lot of migration, a lot of change regarding where people move to study or work or live or retire, we learn a lot about the specific country and customs there, but not all the times, we look deep into the cultural values of that place.
I believe what you will read next will help you not only know more about yourself, but also help you in being more empathetic with different people and cultures and with respecting one’s point of view and perspective. While I was reading through the book of Gaston Dorren (who is a polyglot), who wrote “Babel, Around the world in 20 languages”, I was able to get more insight into the different cultures of the world, how those people of other countries than me think and how their culture reflects in the language itself and it really opened my eyes to how unique and beautiful people are but also how little we actually know about the world. Cultural Intelligence highlights the importance of understanding different perspectives and then appropriately and effectively adapt our behaviour to obtain success. As an expat myself it is very hard to accept specific norms of the country I am in, because of personal and cultural value I grew with. But what you are about to read below will give a context or a form for better classifying your values, others’s values and then correctly identify in a new person or group of people or even in an organization these values. And why is this crucial? Because we, as human beings enjoy to feel at home wherever we are, we need comfort and familiarity. When we know our own values, we can better cope ourselves with others and we can expand on our self-knowledge even further, we can understand ourselves better and then it will become so much easier to cooperate, collaborate and work on our desired achievements.
There are 10 cultural clusters – Nordic Europe, Anglo, Germanic Europe, Eastern Europe, Latin Europe, Latin America, Confucian Asia, Southern Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and Arab.
Over the decades a number of scholars and researchers identified cultural value dimensions and general geographical clusters for these cultural value dimensions. As a disclaimer there is a wide range of variation in cultural values that individuals in the same cultural cluster may actually express. This means an individual’s personal orientation may not reflect the generalised tendency of a specific geographical cultural cluster. At the same time, research does reveal that a large number of people within these geographic clusters do share similar values. So it can be a starting point to begin understanding the similarities and differences between your preferred values and the cultural values of others.
Cultural clusters provide possible insight into where we may likely find the presence of a cultural value dimension. We have the opportunity to use cultural intelligence to determine if diversity or differences in cultural values might explain a challenge, a misunderstanding, confusion or miscommunication. Using CQ provides an opportunity to recognize difference and diversify in order to adapt our behavior which facilitates effective and appropriate interaction across diversities.
Cultural intelligence or CQ is defined as the capability to be effective across different cultural context, including national, ethnic, generational, organizational and other contexts. The culturally intelligent have a good grasp of overarching patterns that exist across various cultures around the world. It’s not that the culturally intelligent are walking encyclopedias who can spout off random facts about any culture on the planet. That’s impossible. But they have a macro understanding of cultural similarities and differences, something we identify as CQ knowledge – one of the four capabilities of cultural intelligence. CQ knowledge is the degree to which you understand how culture influences how people think and behave; it’s also your level of familiarity with how cultures are similar and different.
One way to improve your CQ knowledge is to learn the key characteristics of 10 global cultural clusters, which are large cultural groupings that share some core patterns of thinking and behaving. The countries and groupings of people within each cluster typically share a common history and they often share similar geography, language, religion or cultural values. The 10 clusters are simply a place to begin comparing one predominant worldview with another. As you develop a deeper understanding of the clusters’ similarities and differences, you’ll find yourself more adept at handling all kinds of intercultural situations. Why talk about clusters, and overall patterns and norms for people from various cultures? Because there’s value in something that cross-cultural psychologists Joyce Osland and Allan Bird describe as “sophisticated stereotypes” – broad comparative differences based on empirical intercultural research. Sophisticated stereotypes such as those that stem from understanding the 10 cultural clusters, are most helpful when they are:
-used to compare various cultures rather than to understand the behavior of a singular culture
-descriptive not evaluative
-used as a best first-guess prior to having direct information about specific people
-modified based upon further observation and experience
The cultural value dimensions
Individualism – Collectivism
An individualist is motivated by personal rewards and benefits. Individualist persons set personal goals and objectives based on self. Individualistic workers are very comfortable working with autonomy and not part of the team.
The collectivist is motivated by group goals, Long term relationships are very important. Collectivistic persons easily sacrifice individual benefit or praise to recognize and honor the team’s success.
The generalized geographic clusters of individualism may be found in Anglo countries, Germanic Europe and Nordic Europe. Geographic clusters for collectivism are often located in Arab countries, Latin America, Confucian Asia, Southern Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Low and high-power distance – is a lot about authority and hierarchy.
A person with low power distance thinks the less formal the better. They prefer to forego formalities and are willing to respectfully question or challenge authority. Titles and positions of authority and leadership are not important to a low power distance person.
A high-power distance individual feels obligated to follow strictly the chain of command and is far less likely to question authority or leadership. Respecting and honoring the position of leadership is highly important in a high-power distance society.
An example is in Germanic Europe, a low power distance culture cluster, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her husband live in a very modest flat in Berlin. On the other hand, Southern Asia is a high power distance culture cluster. In Southern Asia using formal titles are very important and not to be ignored. High power distance mandates that people of higher status receive special seating at dinning or in a business meeting.
Low versus high uncertainty avoidance
The cultural value dimension of low or high uncertainty avoidance resides in the question of should we try to control the future or just let the future happen? How shall we deal with the future when the future can never be known for sure?
Low uncertainty avoidance persons act first and then get the information. They are very comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty. Cultural value clusters of low uncertainty avoidance work hard to minimize rules and laws that infringe on people’s diverse perspectives.
High uncertainty avoidance often requires rigid codes of behavior and beliefs. There may easily be intolerance of unorthodox behaviours and ideas. Persons with high uncertainty avoidance appreciate explicit instructions. They often rely on procedures and policies to reduce the change of things getting out of control.
Anglo countries, Eastern Europe and Nordic Europe have a preference for low uncertainty avoidance. Latin Europe and Latin America emphasize planning and predictability or high uncertainty avoidance.
Cooperative and competitive dimensions
A person with a cooperative cultural value emphasizes collaboration, nurturing and family.
A person who has a competitive value dimension emphasises competition, assertiveness and achievement.
The cooperative versus competition cultural value dimension considers how you wish to achieve results and accomplish goals. A cooperative person believes the best way to accomplish an objective or reach an outcome is by getting people to work together. However, a competitive person believes people are best motivated to reach a goal when competition is involved in the process.
If we consider geographic cultural dimensions, Nordic Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa prefer cooperation. Germanic Europe and Anglo countries emphasize a competitive cultural dimension. In the middle between cooperative and competitive, we find Arab countries, Confucian Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Latin Europe and Southern Asia.
Short versus long term
This cultural dimension is based on how a culture views time and the importance of the past, present and future. Short term is the cultural dimension which emphasizes immediate outcomes and success now. Long term planning and success later guide the long-term cultural dimension.
Confucian Asia is in the long-term geographic cluster. It is interesting that China is said to be planning for the next 500 years while other nations have a 5-year plan. Anglo-countries, Arab nations, Eastern Europe, Nordic Europe, and Sub-Saharan Africa are in the short-term geographic cluster. Eastern Europe, Latin America and Latin Europe use both a short-term and a long-term dimension.
When we use a long-term dimension, we focus on the future. We value persistence. We easily delay social success. Personal and emotional gratification is delayed.
A short-term orientation cares more about immediate gratification. The past and present is more important than the future. A short-term orientation values the current social hierarchy. Meeting current social obligations is emphasized by a person with a short-term perspective.
Low and high context
In a low context cultural dimension encounter, the emphasis is on explicit and direct communication. In a high context experience, the communication is indirect and the tone of voice and context of the communication is most important.
The individual with a low context orientation values direct communication. He or she choose their words very carefully. Logic is important.
A low context person believes in clearly saying what they mean and totally meaning what is said.
A high context and indirect person will pay attention to what is not said as much as what is said. A high context person will notice the context such as where people are seated and how individuals are dressed. A preference for high context means you need to constantly read between the lines. High context persons speak indirectly to peers and tend to avoid conflict that is head on.
Geographic clusters that prefer low context and direct communication are Anglo countries, Germanic Europe and Nordic Europe. Arab countries, Confucian Asia, Southern Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa emphasize a high context with an indirect communication cultural dimension.
Being versus doing
Being and doing is the extent to which you derive meaning from activity and being productive.
A high doing person wants to be productive on a day off or holiday. A doing culture emphasizes being busy and meeting goals. A being culture stresses the quality of life and work-life balance.
In a doing culture getting a job done takes precedence over personal relationships. You may miss a family member’s birthday celebration because you have work to do. You earn status through the work you do. Status is not based on your age, seniority or birthright. Deadlines and schedules are emphasized in a doing culture. Work-related emails are often answered 24h a days and 7 days a week if the person emphasizes doing over being.
In a being culture, status is automatic and difficult to lose. Status is often based on your age, birth and seniority. Relationships take precedence over tasks or getting a job done. Much time is spent getting to know someone before agreeing to do business with them. Greeting and farewell rituals are considered important. A work-related email is probably not going to be answered by a being orientated person if it is received during vacation.
Geographic clusters of doing cultural dimension are found in Anglo countries and Germanic Europe.
Being geographic clusters are located in Arab countries, Latin America, Nordic Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Universalism and particularism
The cultural dimension of universalism versus particularism is the same as rules versus relationships. Universalism is about the rules and standards. Particularism is about the unique specifics and relationships.
In a culture that prefers universalism, the rules and standards apply to everyone the same. In a culture that emphasizes particularism, there are unique standards and exceptions. Applications of the rules depend on the unique exceptions and the relationships of the persons involved.
A person with a universal perspective applies all procedures the same universally to ensure equity and consistency. A particular oriented person encourages flexibility by adapting to particular situations and making exceptions to the rule.
Rules and standards that apply equally to everyone are typical of Anglo countries, Germanic Europe and Nordic Europe. An emphasis on the specifics allowing room for unique adjustments to rules based on relationships is common in Arab countries, Confucian Asia, Southern Asia and Sub-Saharan Asia.
Non-expressive versus expressive
The communication cultural value that prefers to emphasize non-emotional communication and to hide feelings is the neutral or non-expressive cultural dimension. The affective or expressive cultural dimension prefers expressive communication and sharing feelings.
The geographic cultural value clusters for the neutral or non-expressive cultural value dimension are Confucian Asia, Eastern Europe, Germanic Europe and Nordic Europe. Anglo countries and Southern Asia emphasize both non-expressive and expressive cultural values. Arab countries, Latin America, Latin Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa prefer affective, expressive communications and sharing feelings.
Monochronic and polychronic dimensions
A monochronic persons sees time as a commodity. It is quantifiable and there is limited supply of it. You can waste time.
The polychronic individual considers time to be limitless and unmeasurable. Time is a servant and a tool we use.
Monochronic and linear cultural dimensions emphasize doing one thing at a time, always being on time, events are scheduled to start on time, and work time and personal time are separated. Anglo countries, Germanic Europe and Nordic Europe emphasize the monochronic and linear cultural values.
Confucian Asia, Eastern Europe and Southern Asia emphasize both a monochronic linear and a polychronic non-linear as cultural values.
Polychronic and non-linear cultural values emphasize multi-tasking, find interruptions very acceptable, and easily combine work with personal life. Arab countries, Latin America, Latin Europe and Sub-Saharan prefer the polychronic non-linear cultural value dimension.
Individuals have personal preferences or individual value orientations. Sometimes individual orientations reflect one’s nationality or ethnicity or diversity but not always. Cultural value orientations can be grouped into general geographical clusters. Knowledge of these cultural value dimensions and 10 of the largest cultural groupings can sometimes give us insight into potential cross-cultural misunderstandings and challenges.

CQ Knowledge is the degree to which you understand how culture influences how people think and behave, it’s also your level of familiarity with how cultures are similar and different. While this kind of understanding alone doesn’t make you culturally intelligent, it is a vital part of becoming effective across different cultural contexts. I am still learning about this concept and expanding my vision on the topic also because working in a fraud detection department requires me to have this knowledge in prediction and understanding the potential threat. Why is this important to be know? The ability to understand different perspectives and then appropriately and effectively adapt our behaviour is now required for success. CQ is unique in that it predicts our capabilities to work with diversity and differences. Understanding, using and increasing our cultural intelligence improves the way we relate to and network with diverse others. There are 4 specific capabilities comprising CQ. The first is CQ drive or motivation, second CQ knowledge or cognition, next is CQ strategy or metacognition, and the last is CQ action or behaviour. Cultural intelligence can be developed and improved. In the next weeks I will be sharing more on this topic, it is a course I am taking on FutureLearn (something similar to Coursera) and I think it is an important subject given that CQ provides an opportunity to recognise or determine if diversity or differences in cultural values might explain a challenge, misunderstanding, confusion or miscommunication and these are needed to be tackled to effectively facilitate human interaction across diversities.
Linkedin Courses taken (2) – Leading like a futurist – I would not say that you necessarily need to be a leader or manager to profit from the concepts and ideas of this course, it is needed for all of us to reinvent our lives and understand the world we live in, from a different perspective. First the course explored what is a futurist. A futurist is a person that can see, shape and share the future. A futurist creates and communicates future opportunities. A futurist is not afraid to be a visionary. The skills needed by a futurist are that he/she is keen and curious observers, they seek diverse perspectives, they represent the finders of clarity in the complex, they are comfortable with ambiguity and they are compelling communicators. And all these skills are skills that the world we currently live in NEEDS MORE OF, and will be in much more need of because of the emerging trends and technologies. By learning more about what a futurist is and moreover about a futurist leader, you expose yourself to more opportunities, either because you can create them or you see them and can ride them. There were lots of amazing ideas in the course, and one of them was the concept of a future shaper. A future shaper has a mindset regarding the way we see or could see the future and a future shaper is able to notice more of what’s around in the world, is able to use everything at hand (knowledge, trend, etc) and is capable of letting go of being right and letting go of being the smartest in the room. These practices create a mindset of anticipation, evaluation of possible futures and analysis of their viability and sustainability, constant observation and scanning of the external environment. Mindset is at the heart. Mindset of individuals multiply to create a mindset of a community, and that community can inspire and connect with other communities, thus making possible the future one person thinks of or “dreams” of, to become if not a reality, then at least to bring more awareness of its potentiality. A futurist is able to communicate the future in a compelling, emotional way to motivate people into taking action with the vision stated. That’s why it’s a leader. A futurist leader or a future shaper is seeking to make us mindful of our capability to see, shape and share the future that we want to be part of. Once you gain that mindset, you become yourself a futurist or future shaper. Really great course, highly recommend it and to give you a glimpse of what the future holds for us in the next decade, I have selected some future trends, basically copy pasting what they wrote, because it is very WOW (that I discovered online on WGSN, which is a leading trend forecaster for insights and inspiration around the globe) for all of us to be waiting for:
“1.BORO – made, do and mend. – In an effort to be conscious consumers, we are shopping less and buying “better”. But what does this mean for the things we already own?This Japanese method “BORO” means born-out-of-necessity patchworking and will become the norm in the next decade. 3. FROZEN FOOD – convenience food, but made wellness. Frozen food will experience a renaissance as consumers turn to it as a convenient way of eating that also reduces waste. Wellness – focused consumers have adopted frozen fruit and vegetables in smoothies as a convenient way of introducing micronutrients into their diets. They are now open to trying new, healthy frozen meals and ingredients. Frozen food start ups are providing plant-based or gourmet meals and ingredients to update convenience food. People will also start challenging consumerism and they will focus more on self-sufficiency as they explore how to survive during times of extreme disruption in a decade of environmental and societal turmoil.
4.INTIMACY SCHOOLS – How to be human 101 (actually in my country, Romania, there is one educational leader offering these type of classes related to relationships already) – The intimacy recession means we’re increasingly more connected to our phones than to each other. The 2020s will witness an active backlash to the loneliness epidemic being faced in many developed societies, driven by our smartphone addictions. Much like the rise of mindfulness as a trend, we will go to class to learn how to reconnect with other people, discover how to be vulnerable and build deeper bonds (romantic or platonic) with each other. Now, NIKSEN really ties beautifully to the other short course I took on Linkedin this week named “How to slow down and be more productive“. It was an eye opening packed with knowledge course that I related so much to and found profoundly life changing for me at least. Even though the concept of slow and the SLOW movement is something I was aware of for years now, I realised I was not practising it. Currently, you may feel as I feel too, that we are living in a state of impatience. I will re-write this. We are living in a state of IMPATIENCE. Not emergency, but impatience to do this and that, to be as fast as possible to go through workload, to schedule meeting after meeting, to be in a constant state of “working” and of ticking boxes when we have done certain tasks, forgetting about taking a moment, not a break, but a moment to give our brain breathing time to get prepared for the next task, meeting, deadline or activity. When we jump mindless to activity from another activity, without allowing ourselves time to digest what just happened we experience what the speaker of the course named to be “the missing minute”. The missing minute is required for us to recover the space between the things we do.
The course is opening our eyes and minds to re-program our brains to do things more patiently – don’t work too quickly, take the extra time – add a touch of more patience to it and take the time to cool down. THE MORE IMPORTANT THE WORK IS, THE MORE COOL DOWN TIME WE NEED TO HAVE. Take a minute and reclaim the missing minute by making a careful choice without feeling pressured by others to make a decision, to finish a specific task, to do an activity, to do your job. The course is focusing on raising awareness around separating what is happening from what is required for our success. Slowing down is about finding that reasonable expectation that others have of you to finish the job and then stick to it. This means you can work comfortably in your own pace and you can do the job between the requests and expectations decided together with the other person you are working with. For this to actually work, you also need to show others that they may be rushing mindlessly too, without knowing, yet.
To cultivate awareness of the moments when you are rushed, you can ask your superior or leader or yourself “How long can you comfortably wait until I respond? When is the latest this can be done? Do you need the whole project or a part of it by that date?” This gives the other person thinking time to help them pause as well and become more present and more capable of making decisions about deadlines. Careful questions can lead to constructive conversations.
Reclaim your missing minute and start by taking 1 minute now without doing anything. No scrolling, no browsing, no reading, no replying, no copy pasting. Just put the timer on your phone for 1 minute and stand still. I have done this and that 60 seconds seemed like an eternity. Amazing insight from that alone only! And, in this way you can understand why the NIKSEN prediction will occur. There’s a need and a market.

Always make sure you do something for YOURSELF and not for others or for something or to someone to prove to, as mentioned a woman should not compete with other women and should not feel the need to compete because she is unique, different and perfect as she is, simply because she is taking care of herself and she is already doing everything that she enjoys, she is creative, she makes time for herself and for her hobbies and she is doing only what she likes.

Sometimes, what is meant for you, can’t find you because you are simply not being yourself. That’s why it’s important to tap into your own creative feminine divine power. “Be the moon and inspire people, even when you’re far from full”, I read the other day.
I have first heard about the connection between physical disease and emotions back in 2008 when I was still a student of Psychology. During that year, I became very passionate about Positive Psychology (soon I will be writing about it too) and a new interest or therapy, an alternative healing method named the Bach Flower Therapy, created by Edward Bach who was a doctor and a homeopath. The Bach Flower therapy relies on the fact that healing our emotions is relevant for overcoming our diseases.
The Bach flower Therapies seem to add up to the writings of Louise Hay. A bestselling author and a teacher by profession, Hay’s ‘You Can Heal Your Life’ have done a beautiful job at building connection between the physical diseases and the mental diseases. If in Bach flower therapy, flowers have the potential to heal our emotional challenges, in emotional causes of diseases and positive affirmations of Louise Hay, to heal these emotional challenges, we have the ability to heal ourselves. In her work, the premise is that our thoughts create what happens in our life, including our health issues. Her suggested remedy is to say affirmations to change our thought patterns, and therefore change the problems in our life. Bach flower therapy relies on including specific flower extracts to heal certain emotions that are connected to physical diseases. I think both these approaches can offer a wider perspective over healing and over mental and emotional states of mind. It can aid our understanding of ourselves which in turn helps a lot the understanding of disease, therefore clarifying our emotions and our thinking patterns, we can change our lives. It’s our underlying emotions that create our physical problems, as well as what happens in our life. It’s also our emotions that create the thoughts that we have. And it’s our resistance to feeling those emotions that causes the physical ailment to manifest.

Louise M Hay is also known for her work regarding positive affirmations. I have wrote about this a couple of years back, in a post here if you wish to have a read and include in your healing.

I was thinking recently about the content that I consume online. I was reflecting upon the teachings I obtain out of that. And it turns out, the majority is something similar to fast food – it tastes good, but it depletes you of energy and it’s not teaching me much.
So, I decided to stop consuming specific trendy or popular Instagram peoples that were not filling up my learning cup. Rather, it was taking me, my time, which I can use to better myself and to actually gain something out of that content consumption. So, here we are. I realised, much as I realised a couple of years back, when I was left stranded with no internet in the middle of the December holidays – Lessons of digital Detoxlink, that a lot of what I watch or see or read online is superficial. Super superficial. And in 2020, I want to make sure I consume content that makes me better or strive to be better, that teaches me something, that is helpful and useful, much as the content I want to produce and the mission this blog has, and not just content that is enjoyable, beautiful and catchy. Because, we all know, we are all, more than just, clothes, beauty and the so called “lifestyle” which concept, recently has lost its core. It is becoming increasingly connected to a certain luxury living and spa style life. Lifestyle is not what it used to be associated with, and the culprits are Instagram people and Youtubers that have transformed the meaning, because of what they promote or show through their videos and because of the perception we obtain based on that “show”. Unfortunately, we are all, also behind this lessening of the power of the word, because we are strongly condemning the concept in favour of other notions we are more close to, such as minimalism, and the reason behind that, in my humble opinion, is the fact that most of us relate to the normality of minimalism, daily struggle and frugal living, rather than a lavish lifestyle that we see portrayed everywhere around us, and of course, we desire it, it’s normal. But it’s not normal to stop relating to what truly deeply lifestyle is all about. It’s not just about food or healthy food or about exercising or about yoga and fitness, that we mostly define it by with, more and more, it’s about having a life that we enjoy, a life that we want, a life that keeps us going, that is sustainable to maintain and that keeps other people want to join in not because it’s “fashionable”, but because it is truly connecting us, as humans, it’s creating a community of like-minded people. But, it’s not this, which I have learned today.
Today I have learned that I get consumed by the content that I consume. And that happens because it’s easy to get in the “desire mood” of stuff we see online and we get fickle about things afterwards. I wrote about consumerism many years ago in this blog post named “A minimalist journey” and I realised that, once again, if you stay too much in the realm of people that are like that, you end up believing that’s what you need too. It’s the same as the saying “you are the quintessence of the top 5 people you most surround yourself with“. It goes the same for social media. Who do you constantly follow and how does that person influence you? The influence is subtle, is invisible, it’s clever. You may not realise but the coat you bought could have been triggered by a coat you saw at one of your favourite social media persons, and it does not need to be recent, it could have been seen 6 months ago. It’s still in your subconscious mind. Remember the trick with the subconscious mind and working pattern? It’s in this blog post.
I have learned today that there are people that lie and create a life based on that lie and they are able to live comfortably for a very long time. It’s hard to spot a faker because he has been faking it all his life. A faker is an expert in lie. He’s lied ever since he was younger. How can that person not be a professional in keeping up a mask that hides the fact they are not who they show the world they are, they do not have the knowledge or expertise of what they portray to have, and they are not the humans they say they are. It’s hard to see the missing pieces, because their flaws are hidden in plain sight. Sometimes so well, that you mistake the flaw with a quality. And the problem is this people are making YOU believe you have a problem, when in reality, it’s the other way around. Be careful, who you surround yourself with. You need an observatory spirit and you need lots of NUNCHI.
That’s the second thing I learned today. NUNCHI.
Nunchi is the Korean secret to happiness and success. The core of this view to life is reflected in a motto belonging to Arthur Conan Doyle and it goes like this “the world is full of obvious things that no one notices ever.”
Why people fail to observe these obvious things? Because people are more concerned with the rationals they hold in their heads and their cognitive distortions – see info on that here – link – and in this smartphone age we cannot notice it anymore because we have no time. Nunchi is something like a signal for intuition. Intuition is something we feel based on a variety of factors and brain shortcuts we have accumulated in time and that serve us as a life situations guide, more like a “how to” way of acting and behaving. Nunchi is from what I understood, a way of reflecting this side of the intuition in a mindful manner. If intuition happens more like a spark, something we feel all of a sudden and we interpret it as something we must or must not do (based on those factors appreciated briefly above), nunchi happens mindfully because we decide to pay attention, closely to things around us. If intuition is more like interpretation based on similar stuff that happened in the past (which is recorded somewhere in our memory and our survival brain is sending subtle signals to help us), nunchi is bringing this unconscious ability into the conscious realm.
When we experience intuition, is usually connected to a random situation in space and time, to subtle behaviours and words and non-verbal communication, to impulsiveness, in a way. When we want to feel nunchi and approach this on a day by day basis, we collide the intuition into constant present time, we force it to happen all the time, because we DECIDE consciously to be intuitive, to be observant, to notice, to care, to open our eyes and clearly see. I feel, nunchi is something we mindfully decide on experiencing.
It’s like the mindful version of intuition.
The third thing I learned today is in connection to nunchi and introversion. When I first read the book “The power of introverts” by Susan Cain, I felt that finally, here is something I can relate to totally. Well, in my opinion, nunchi is a form of power that mostly, introverts have acquired in their lifetime, due to their ability to be more patient with themselves, to be observant, to notice things that would normally be unseen by other people. An introvert is in a native manner more inclined to connect to his or her inner compass and that inner compass is this way of living, named by the Koreans “NUNCHI”. Nunchi is about understanding when to shut up, when to not disclose YOUR views, YOUR experiences, YOUR everything and why it is important to listen to the person that is giving you all these information. Observe what information you are being given. When you observe that, you will notice that you will be more careful with what you disclose, because you know what people can guess about you based on your disclosing thoughts. Nunchi is about being more present in the day to day life, about being mindful regarding our life experiences, about accepting the day to day “moods” and capturing in our inner compass all those subtle movements, words, gestures and sayings, maybe colours, situations, surroundings and details to better serve us for the future and to help us understand ourselves better.
When we pay attention, we select information. When we pay attention we are interested and when we are truly curious and interested, we remember better. Nunchi is about remembering all that and applying it every single second. It’s truly mindfulness overload. It’s living in the present moment. It’s more like Eckhart Tolle’s “the power of now”. Nunchi is the power of now.
Forth thing learned today is WORD OF 2019. Did you know that starting 2004, Oxford Dictionaries is designating one word per YEAR as the WORD OF THE YEAR? If in other years, words such as “selfie”, “vape” or “unfriend” have been on top, this year the first place was occupied by “climate emergency”. The oxford word of the Year is a word or expression shown through usage evidence to reflect the ethos, mood or preoccupations of the passing year, and have lasting potential as a term of cultural significance. So 2019 is marked by climate emergency. Read more about the reasons behind this decision here, although I am sure you can relate to the reason this has been selected, as we all have been impacted this year by the impact of the climate itself and can easily relate to its significance.
